Yuen Long

Yuen Long (元朗) is an area in the western New Territories of Hong Kong that once used to be traditional market town for selling fish and local produce until more modern retail malls and restaurants started appearing. Although some parallel trading still takes place today, Yuen Long is becoming a popular place to live and visit, mostly thanks to its pleasant environment, and the gradually increasing number of creative eateries, new tea houses, and mom & pop stores that have been established over the years. If you are looking for some retail therapy, you can take a stroll around YOHO mall I and YOHO mall II which have over 50 restaurants and a cinema. In terms of housing, there are plenty of options to choose from, all with easy access to facilities, although there are slightly more public housing estates than there are village houses. Most of the heavy industrial properties are located in the Yuen Long Industrial Estate boarding the Shan Pui River and the Fung Lok Wai wetland area. There is no shortage of places to explore; if you are a conservationist or a nature-loving family, you will enjoy the many conservation and wetlands areas in close proximity. Take some time to discover the popular Ping Shan Heritage Trail and indulge in some traditional Chinese-style architecture including historic ancestral halls, temples and walled hamlets. The trail is about 1.6 kilometres long, it winds through some of Yeun Long's surrounding low-rise residential neighbourhoods. For another fun family activity, you can pick your own fresh and juicy strawberries at the organic Long Ping Strawberry Farm, which is open to public and entry is free (the best time to go there is between December to April).
