Western District
Western District has the following subdistrict(s) : Kennedy Town, Mid Levels West, Pok Fu Lam, Sai Ying Pun, Shek Tong Tsui, Sheung Wan
Western District covers the western part of Hong Kong Island, from the harbour to Pok Fu Lam, spanning ~12 km² with over 500,000 residents as of 2025. Sai Ying Pun, Kennedy Town, and western Sheung Wan are key areas. Dried seafood wholesalers on Des Voeux Road West and the bird market on Yu Lok Street retain old Hong Kong vibes. The University of Hong Kong in Pok Fu Lam features century-old architecture like the Main Building. The former Western Cargo Handling Area has become Belcher’s residential zone. Public estates like Shek Tong Tsui and Kwun Lung Lau are dense; trams chime along Des Voeux Road West. The Western Harbour Crossing links Kowloon; Kennedy Town Swimming Pool is a local morning swim spot. High Street in Sai Ying Pun has been revitalized with cafés and galleries, drawing the young. Western District blends traditional markets like Western Market with modern communities like Cadogan Garden, preserving East-West cultural traces—a key western residential and transport hub.
