Kowloon City

Kowloon City (九龍城) is an older, relatively low-density, residential area within the Kowloon District that has slowly been transformed into a more modern area. Previously, Kowloon City was home to the Kai Tak international airport, and as a result, height restrictions to buildings in Kowloon City were imposed to minimise any potential hazards of low flying aircraft. After Hong Kong international airport was built, the height restrictions were lifted and more high-rise buildings started to appear. Kowloon City used to be frequented by plane spotters hoping to snap a spectacular photo in-between buildings of low flying aircraft. Kowloon City has also developed a reputation amongst many food enthusiasts who can be treated to a variety of great Southeast Asian cuisines (particularly Thai restaurants and grocery stores) which has led some locals dubbing it as “Hong Kong’s Little Thailand”. Tung Tau Estate is the main public housing estate within the Kowloon City, and the main retail building is the Kowloon City Plaza. Other notable places of interest include the Kowloon City Public Market, the historical Chinese military outpost now called 'Kowloon Walled City Park'.
